Regular monitoring of data from industrial tomato processing campaigns has revealed a gradual deterioration in industrial yield from one campaign to the other. The latter went from 5.75 kg of fresh tomatoes to produce 1Kg of tomato paste in 2009 to 6.7 in 2021.This deterioration results from the poor quality of fresh tomatoes received, characterized by a low sugar content (Brix) and a high rate of waste.To remedy this, GICA has launched since 2015 a program of varietal trials of the seasonal tomato crop supervised by the engineer Ahmed Arbi.Having as objectives the characterization in addition to the quantitative and qualitative evaluation of the productive potential of the varieties available on the local market, this program covered the main regions of tomato production namely Nabeul, Sidi Bouzid, Kairouan, Beja and Gafsa.An overview of the program results is now available on our website www.gica.tn, the entire study will soon be available in paper and digital versions.
