History· Tomato cultivation was introduced in Tunisia during the reign of Othman Bey by the first Andalusians who came to settle in the regions of Cap Bon and the lower valley of Oued Medjerda.
· 1903: Setting up of the first processing unit (at Cap Bon).
· 2000: Reaching self-sufficiency.

On the agronomic level		· Number of producers ≈ 10,000.
· Plantation areas: 2019: 17700 ha/ 2020: 16500 ha.
· Main production regions: 2019: Center (34%)/ Nabeul (32.5%)/ North West (22.5%)/ Greater Tunis (8.5%)/ Other regions (2.5%).
· Average agronomic performance: 2020: 70 T/ha.
· Seasonal tomato production: 2019: 1.1 million T/ 2020: 1.2 million T.
· Varieties: There is a wide range of varieties that differ in the length of their crop cycles. By combining them, these varieties make it possible to optimize the period of industrial processing.
On the industrial level· Industrial fabric: 26 transformation units.
· 3000 jobs, most of them are seasonal.
· Processing capacity: 36 thousand tons of fresh tomatoes per day.

  o Double Concentrated Tomato Paste: 2019: 798000 T/ 2020: 943000 T.
 o Other canned tomatoes: 2019: 17000 T/ 2020: 22000 T.
o Dried tomatoes: 2019: 60000 T/ 2020: 70000 T.
· Tomato paste represents 60% of the food canning sector.
· Main processing regions: 2020: Nabeul (37%) / North West (36%) / Greater Tunis (14%) / Center (13%).
