Following the degradation of industrial yield recorded during the 2015 campaign: 7 Kg of fresh tomatoes to produce 1 Kg of double concentrated tomato paste (DCT), the National Committee for Programming & Monitoring of Industrial Tomato Processing Campaigns decided on 12/11/2015 to set up stations for experimenting with tomato varieties.

Since 2016, and with the collaboration of processing units, nurseries and seed companies, the Tunisian canned food industries group GICA has set up 38 experimental stations of tomato varieties, at the level of the main regions of the cultivation of seasonal tomato (Cap Bon, Kairouan, Gafsa and North West …) to characterize quantitatively and qualitatively the varieties available on the Tunisian market and study their suitability for processing.

On February 22, 2021, and according to the statements of agricultural technicians of nurseries, the planting areas in the various regions have reached nearly 17,000 ha.

It should be noted that planting continues in the regions of Jendouba, Kef, Seliana and Bizerte.
